Designers are not artists

Something I wanted to leave as a comment on Facebook design lead’s blog post that praises designers as artists. Medium had a bug that prevented me from doing so.

Here’s a quote that resonates with my personal point of view on the subject of treating designers as artists:

“Contrary to popular belief, designers are not artists. We employ artistic methods to visualize thinking and process, but, unlike artists, we work to solve a client’s problem, not present our own view of the world.”

Excerpt From: Monteiro, Mike. “Design Is a Job.”

Highly recommend reading that book by the way. Really.

Design is not about creating cool stuff with no limits. Rather creating the best thing possible within the tight and changing limitations of scope, budget and requirements.

It is also always about creating stuff for someone else.

Folks, get comfortable with that or change the profession.
